ALL THAT’S LEFT Is it all we have caused? Is it all true, we lost? ooh oh ooh... So is it true oh is it true that we are one? And is it true oh is it true we fall apart? If all we loved has gone If all we loved has gone If all that’s left is strong If all we lost is won Silently I recall Colors in early fall You see beauty in perfection I see it in imperfection Were we destined to discover endless dreams Within one another? So is it true oh is it true that we are one? And is it true oh is it true we fall apart? If all we loved has gone If all we loved has gone If all that’s left is strong If all we lost is won

The Castle 05:18
THE CASTLE The castle which I built The castle which I built The castle which I built The castle which I built Has come to fall Has come to fall Has come to fall The Castle in which I’ve lived The Castle in which I’ve lived The Castle in which I’ve lived The Castle in which I’ve lived That once was my home That once was my home That once was my home Has come to fall Linger on and on Was this dream a whirl to wake up from To find our lost youth in the shape of truth and lies When all we find is drowned in secrets? This was a mighty fall But we’ve come to discover it, at last Castles made of glass must fall If life presents itself For those who claim it

TELL YOU A STORY I’ll tell you a story and this story’s not very new It’s been told by many folks in many versions and many times too It’s been told by ones like you And told by people across the sea It holds all hopes for us who still believe in a way to be free But if you stay... But if you stay... But if you stay... Don’t go away Things might change while time will pass, but things haven’t changed that much Those who dare can clear the misty dust of disguise as such If we open our eyes Just open our eyes See time that flies See melting ice All the past has told us is how we never should react We incline to hold position even against the facts So what can we lose? There’s nothing to choose What can we choose? There’s nothing to lose Is this life a vision to behold? Or a story told by those who grow? By those who grow Some of us still care... It is not the end if we destroy our inheritance Save the life of little children Leave them to play with plans So what do you say? What do you say? There’s no time to play Cause we found a way This life is a vision to behold And a story told by those who grow By those who grow Some of us still care...

Crossfades 04:06
CROSSFADES In those precious lies You hear them sing alike Between the lines you find You’ll overcome In those nights of wine My shelter has run dry A tiny glimpse just shy Will overcome any crime Will I drop a line And wrap it in a sigh We are running out of time But we close our eyes from behind And we will enter shapes of a door Prejudiced by what you’ve heard before ’cause our language is measured in crossfades And empty words and empty shapes The day I could call mine I carried out my kind I’m shatterproof and just fine But all alone with my time And we will enter shapes of a door Prejudiced by what you’ve heard before Cause our language is measured in crossfades oooooooooh

Fragments 04:05
FRAGMENTS Come again to see me When the lights have changed And leaves have turned to brown Come again to show me What there’s been erased The lost stone of our crown But there is time to elate Proof that there is innocence Inside your little town Proof that there is trust I’m sure I’m gonna fall in front of you anyhow Some tasks are never lost But there is time to elate And there is time to elapse Every morning I walk these lonely hills alone To find the point of life My question’s unreplied Existence can not be enough The moon’s a living lie I keep on asking why But there is time to elate And there is time to elapse Every morning We are fragments of the old world We are shadows of the past We are fragments of the old world We are shadows of the past

CIRCLE OF EXISTENCE Come, sit by my window I’ll teach you the world I came to know But this world doesn’t recognize itself anymore See it standing all alone by the lake, All alone by the sea It’s the time we’ve waited so long for and now it will Be here too fast, it’s now you can pick up your new shoes And find out there’s nowhere you can run We’ve been trapped in a circle of existence For instance There is no time to waste ’cause time was never a waste You’ll remember this: the space when the time had stood still So we’ll dance in the moonlight And we’ll sing in the dark And we’ll find isolation Isn’t really that hard You’ll remember this: the day when the time had stood still Was it required? Is this just a joke of history? When the speed of twenty first century’s Come to seed Come to bleed On this day the earth is holding its breath so to speak So we’ll dance in the moonlight And we’ll sing in the dark And we’ll find isolation... Was it always this hard? We’re on we’re on... Come, sit by my window I’ll teach you the world I came to know But this world doesn’t recognize itself anymore
7.
8.
HAZY WINTERSUN Is it a flower, our most precious power Did you protect me Addict me Affect me? And show a place to be Somewhere where the sun shines Again and waits for me Again and waits for you If life shines either way I wouldn’t mind to come and save the day Wait until it comes One day we’ll look upon The hazy wintersun The hazy wintersun Comes shining through A hazy noon Someday we’ll remember Again and wait for it Again and wait for it Is it a rainbow The face of an angel Did I repair you Demand you Or scare you? And show a place to be Somewhere where the sun shines Again and waits for me Again and waits for you
9.
THE PERSISTENT Hold my once persistent dress of white I’ll cover for you when you want to hide I’ll hold the sign Give my inner life to those who can live up To what I never could give I’ll blow the wind To show I’ve never ever wanted to win I insist I never gave you hope I never talked of things you couldn’t cope with So I’ll be Hunting me as you walk up the hill Where you’re sure to fill in In the sidewalks of fame In the sidewalks of fame Where we loved to begin it all In the sidewalks of fame In the sidewalks of fame Where we loved to begin it all And I never had thought you would go If this is what we’ve waited for One day will be our last goodbye By then there’s nothing left I haven’t trie I’ll hold the rain For love we claim the truth to rule
10.
THE HOPE OF FOOLS Where have all the melodies gone In a shape of blue? Where have all the memories gone Which we’ll yearn for soon? If we could know what we had known In a flower’s bloom Is it we, who travel alone Who cover for the fool? When has all our conscience outgrown my intentions, too? When has all our innocence called For its last tune? If we could hold What we once held in our hands like fools We might have built a future on gold And your words would not be sold Time moves on and time must belong Like all treasures do We will go and learn what we know And we should do it soon If we could go Where we once went To fight for flower’s bloom But my idea of a complement falls Like all ideas of fools... But your idea of this world’s outcome Travels not alone

about

‘Elephant Love Song’, is Swiss band Luumu’s (Adina Luumu, Simon Iten and Andy Schelker) impressive third album. To be released in 2023, it offers a fine body of songs which lie somewhere between spherical jazz and dark indie folk, underpinned by classically influenced string arrangements and jazzy brass sections. In ‘Elephant Love Song’, three highly accomplished instrumentalists wander stylistically and confidently between the genres, creating a filigree of breathtaking soundscapes.
An atmospheric, dense, and profound album full of intelligent interludes, carried by Adina’s vocals; a virtuoso in her choice of vocal colours ranging from soft whispers to epic laments. Her often comforting warm voice delivers haunting narratives, for ‘Elephant Love Song’ is a narrative, almost cinematic album that takes its listeners on a journey through magical dream worlds and ugly realities.

The thematic spectrum spans from harsh social realities to the poetic imagination. The album contains incendiary songs about the fight against climate change, one's own powerlessness, and the destructive power of human ignorance ("Tell you a Story", "Crossfades" and "The Hope of Fools"), as well as socio-critical contemporary diagnoses in tracks such as "Circle of Existence", which describes the feeling of breathing again after the lockdown-induced standstill in 2020. In between, there are personal biographical songs such as "Castle" and "Persistent", with their touching deep melancholy.

With the opening track "All That's Left", Luumu playfully create a synthesis between the personal, the social, and the primordial by imaginatively linking a lost love, a broken right wrist, and a concert evening with a left-wing politician. Even in poetic songs like "Hazy Wintersun" or "Fragments", there is subtle criticism of our society. Here, too, the narrator sings with a clear and compelling view of the world and its inhabitants.
The creative aspect of ‘Elephant Love Song’ lies in the personal. All of the album's critical observations are infused with a deep sense of loss. In almost every song, there are lines and images dedicated to a good friend of the composer who lost his life in an accident.

From all these powerful, subtle, comforting, vulnerable, angry and warm moments, a compositional and narrative body of work has emerged, in which each song has been given the precise instrumental scoring it deserves, ranging from a minimalist instrumentation of piano, vocals and flute to a full band instrumentation with multiple overdubs. The interwoven harmony vocals on the album are reminiscent of folk and rock bands from the 60s and 70s, and the melancholy string arrangements evoke the yearning of a Nick Drake song. The piano as a constant accompanist is a clue to the bandleader's musical origins and connects the multi-layered songs into a single, musical adventure.

‘Elephant Love Song’ is a compositionally complex yet accessible work of art, which becomes even more colourful every time you listen to it. A journey through times and worlds that, like a comforting daydream, is best enjoyed with eyes closed.
